Volunteer Opportunities

This is my grandaughter Word Girl. In this picture she is pouring drinks, not for herself, but for those that we came to serve. Word Girl has expressed an interest in wanting to help others in need since she was very small. I could see that this was something that God had put on her heart so I began to pray for an opportunity.

Pre K Graduate

Somehow the settings on my camera got switched to low quality so these are not as good as I would have liked for them to be. Even still, she's still CUTE!
Singing "This Little Light of Mine", and at a public school.

Applying Understanding

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. - Matthew 5:44

This was one of my granddaughters' memory verses. As we were practicing it one morning, I realized from the look on Miss Personality's face, that she didn't know what an enemy was so I asked her and she said "no". I explained that an enemy was someone who was mean to you. Then I told her that God wants us to love and be nice to people even when they are mean to us and He wants us to pray for them.

She looked a bit surprised and said "Why!?". I explained that when we are nice to people who are being mean, it helps to change them so that they will be nicer. I said that sometimes it takes a little time, but if we keep being nice it will help that person to change.

Computer Girl was behind us listening to the conversation and suddenly said "Like the Beast!" They had watched Beauty and the Beast just before this conversation and she made the connection.

For the LORD gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. - Proverbs 2:6

A few weeks later when I went to pick up Computer Girl from her Sunday School class, the teacher asked me who "so and so" was. I don't remember the name she used so I'll call her Addie. She explained that the kids made cards that day that they were to give to someone they knew and that Computer Girl said it was for someone named Addie. I figured it was one of her friends. On the way home from church I asked Computer Girl who Addie was and she told me it was a girl who was mean to her. She said that she wanted to give her a card to help her learn to be nice. *Big Smile*

Her action makes me stop and think about my own response to those people who have crossed my path and have not been very nice to me. Do I lash out at them? Do I hold a grudge? Do I seek revenge? Or do I apply scripture to the situation? Praying for, and doing acts of kindness to those who have hurt us is difficult, but it keeps our own hearts pliable for the Lord to shape into His likeness.

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child  will lead them. Isaiah 11:6

Scripture Memory Verse Project

I've been a bit lax about working on our memory verses and projects lately. Fortunately these girls remind me often. That treasure box is quite the motivator, and Miss Personality LOVES projects.

Sue J at CREATE: Making Something of Today! suggested that I post a list of the bible verses we have learned on my blog. I think that's a great idea so I will be doing that sometime soon for those of you who are interested.

I have noticed that a lot of women, including myself, seem to fall prey to the enemy's attack on our self worth so I really want to plant lots of seeds of Truth in these girls hearts about how God views them. So the bible verse we worked on here is this one.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
The girls made images of themselves using wooden shapes and gluing them to styrofoam plates. I would have used paper plates but I didn't have any. You work with what-cha got. :) Those things that look like angels wings are actually puffy sleeves. Word Girl learned the verse too but wasn't too interested in this project. She's growing up. Oh NO!!

Isaiah 45:3 - He Calls You by Name

I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness- secret riches, I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name. Isaiah 45:3

This is a recent scripture that the girls and I memorized. It's funny that as I'm teaching them, I'm also having to memorize these scriptures with them. That is a good thing.

I have been wanting to focus on the closeness and intimacy that Jesus has with us. That He is real and that He knows them personally. That's why I chose this scripture. There's just something personal about being called by your name. Have you ever noticed that when you are talking with someone and they use your name in the course of the conversation it just makes you feel a little closer to them. It conveys the message that they really know you.

We focused on the fact that Jesus calls us by name, so for our project the girls decorated their initial to hang in their bedrooms. They really enjoyed this project and were delighted with the end result too. These actually turned out much nicer than in the pictures.

The Process
The girls painted wooden letters, then decoupaged torn scrapbook paper on them. I helped fold the edges over to give it a smooth finish.

Here's Word Girl with her "W". :)
She was actually happier than she appears in this picture.

Computer Girl posing with her letter "C". Does she look proud or what?

Of course Miss Personality wasn't satisfied with just one letter. She insisted on spelling out the whole name.

Hopefully, when they look at these hanging on their walls, they will remember the One who calls them by name.

Proverbs 18:30 - He is a Shield

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him. Proverbs 18:30
This is one of the girls' memory verses. I like to help them not only to learn the words of scripture, but also to have some understanding of the meaning. So with this verse I thought we would have a little fun understanding what a shield is, what it does, and what it means to take refuge. And take refuge they did!

We used some poster board that I had on hand to make these shields. I cut them into a shield shape (sort of), and the girls covered them with foil. We glued a stick across the back to help hold it's shape, and stapled cord from the top to the bottom and from one side to the other to use as a handle. There were lots of comments about it looking much like a kite. :)

I bought a package of ping pong balls and let them all throw them at me while I attempted to demonstrate taking refuge behind the shield. Then I let them do it on their own. They had a great time!

Preparing for battle.

This one seemed to like being the target best.

The littlest one (Computer Girl) was a fireball at shooting the ammunition. We had talked about this being a shield of faith and how the enemy will try to attack us. I mentioned that the enemy didn't wait for us to get ready and Computer Girl ran with that phrase as she flung ping pong balls at her opponent as fast as she could.

Shields to the ready! Fortunately Big Sister was a bit more gentle in her shooting.

Of course this is also a good project for Ephesians 6:16 - "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

Goodie, Goodie, Goodie! Treasure!

Do you know what these girls are doing? Well if you read THIS POST at the beginning of the year, you would know that they are picking out a prize from the Memory Verse Treasure Box.

We lost a chunk of time but we are back to memorizing scripture and choosing fun treasures. I have also decided to try to do a craft project to coincide with the memory verses to make it a bit more fun and plant the seeds a little deeper. I don't know how this is going to work out since they start school tomorrow but I'm still going to give it a try.

I will be adding a new item to my menu bar called Kid's Korner, where these will be posted along with other fun kid activities. We have already done two memory verse projects so I'm behind in posting. I hope to get those posted next week so stay tuned.

It All Began with a Cup of Whine

Do you have some whine in your home? You know, that high pitched, long drawn out moaning kind of whine that includes slumped shoulders, a heavy head, and severe dramatization. Miss Personality brought some in my home one day that went something like this... "I'm sooooo boorrred. Can we pleeeease make a project?" So I grabbed a cup to put that whine in. And some construction paper, google eyes, glue, a sharpie, and a cotton ball.

The end result was three happy little girls and their bunnies. This project took about 5 minutes to make and had the girls playing happily together for about an hour. Woooo!

What Goes On at Grandma's House?

Had a sleepover with my darling little granddaughters and thought I would share some of the fun with you. I have been volunteered to do face painting, or paint facing as Ashleigh says, at a church event this Sunday. I needed some volunteers to practice on so I twisted the girls arms to get them to comply. :)

Olivia made ears to go with her puppy face.

Paw prints.

After paint facing we went to the grocery so the girls could show off their new look to the public and because we wanted ice cream. Olivia and I got our favorite, Mocha Almond Fudge, and the little ones opted for ice cream sandwiches.

We came home, ate chicken quesadillas and ice cream for desert, took baths, played on the computer, read a story and about midnight they were wiped out. I let them stay up late since it was Friday and we had no real need for a schedule. :)

Did I wear 'em out good or what?

Saturday activities included fire cracker poppers. See how the decorated my rose bush?

More paint facing.

Thanks for joining us!
