Memory Verses and Rewards

About the end of November I began giving my grandaughters Bible verses to memorize. It has also been helping me since I have to have them committed to memory to help them learn. Whenever they learn a verse, they get to pick something from the goodie box.

Several times a day, especially while we're driving, we repeat the verse several times. After they think they know the verse, I tell them to tell it to me the next day (or that afternoon if it's early in the day) before they can pick something from the goodie box. It amazes me how excited kids get over little trinkets like this. They are a little disappointed at having to wait but I want to be sure they really do know it. I also won't choose a new verse until all three of them have learned the current one. That encourages them to help each other learn it.

We have been learning about one verse a week. That has slowed down a bit since they haven't been coming full weeks lately, but they can still repeat back all of the scriptures accurately.

1. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

2. "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

3. "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Matthew 5:44

4. "My soul glorifies the Lord." Luke 1:46

5. "My spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Luke 1:47

6. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5

7. "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." Proverbs 3:6

As we are learning the verses, God has been providing opportunities for them to see the application of some of these verses as well. I will post one of those early next week.

'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.... You've all got me singing this morning!

I see a verse in there for me to own these days: Pray for those who persecute you..... Maybe if I had a chocolate coin for every time I stopped to pray in that way....

I need to find your refrigerator prayer pals for my kids this spring....it's great timing.

Looking forward to your Sunday pictures!

You certainly must have the gift of knowledge to help your grandchildren learn Bible verses. I don't see mine often enough to do that.

Thanks for your comment about the Hot Chocolate. You inspired me, I just had to do it. Memories of the past are precious to me and hopefully my daughters.
Blessings, my dear friend,
AliceE.

What a neat idea! My children go to AWANA every week, and learn their verses...and they get AWANA bucks when they get them memorized. They abosolutely LOVE getting to buy stuff in the AWANA store, so they have lots of incentive. :o) I've noticed that they are really retaining a lot of scripture, and it's wonderful.

You are such an inspiration, Edie. Your grandkids are so blessed!

Luckily my kids go to a Christian school and have to learn a memory verse each week as part of their regular work. But then they can also recite the same verse at church for a "ticket" and once a month they have a store where kids buy things with their tickets. (You earn tickets for various things besides memory verses). It really does make them eager to learn scripture.

This is a really good idea. You are such a creative person. My grandson goes to a Christian school and has to memorize a verse every week. Last year his class would pray for my husband everyday. He switch schools this year.

Edie, I am behind in my blog reading, but I wanted to let you know how this touched my heart! I love the encouragement that you are giving your granddaughters to learn God's Word. There is no firmer foundation and no greater legacy that you could bequeath them!

"Fix these words of Mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 11:18-19)

Edie, I found your blog through Tracy at Thirsty for Him. I wanted to tell you what an awesome idea this is and to thank you for sharing it with us. I have two grandsons, ages 16 months and 3.5 months. I can't wait until they are old enough to do this! I will definitely be doing this with them. What a great incentive to teach them to learn God's Word.

Hi Edie!! Thanks so much for letting me link to your post for We Did It! Wednesday!!

I just love this idea. I'll have to give it a go with my little Emily. She is so bright for a 3 1/2 yo.; she's just like her Mom was!! Sam was so chatty and gifted!
The other day Emily was on the computer on PBS kids .org and she looks over at me, shakes her head, and puts her hands up and I say "What's wrong, honey?" she sighs and says "I don't understand why this page isn't loading". I just about keeled over with laughter!!

All the girls are adorable!!
Blessings,
Becky
