Proverbs 18:30 - He is a Shield

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him. Proverbs 18:30
This is one of the girls' memory verses. I like to help them not only to learn the words of scripture, but also to have some understanding of the meaning. So with this verse I thought we would have a little fun understanding what a shield is, what it does, and what it means to take refuge. And take refuge they did!

We used some poster board that I had on hand to make these shields. I cut them into a shield shape (sort of), and the girls covered them with foil. We glued a stick across the back to help hold it's shape, and stapled cord from the top to the bottom and from one side to the other to use as a handle. There were lots of comments about it looking much like a kite. :)

I bought a package of ping pong balls and let them all throw them at me while I attempted to demonstrate taking refuge behind the shield. Then I let them do it on their own. They had a great time!

Preparing for battle.

This one seemed to like being the target best.

The littlest one (Computer Girl) was a fireball at shooting the ammunition. We had talked about this being a shield of faith and how the enemy will try to attack us. I mentioned that the enemy didn't wait for us to get ready and Computer Girl ran with that phrase as she flung ping pong balls at her opponent as fast as she could.

Shields to the ready! Fortunately Big Sister was a bit more gentle in her shooting.

Of course this is also a good project for Ephesians 6:16 - "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

A girl needs to be so lost in God, that the guy is going to have to seek HIM to find her!

Oh, Edie:

What an example of our faith. We are to take up HIS shield and follow no matter what the enemy tries to fling at us. We must keep up the good fight knowing that if these "zingers" are ferocious we must be a threat.
Today, I am wondering just how much we have each been used to thwart the enemies plans...and yet we may never know the extent. The shield of faith is obviously far more powerful than we can comprehend.
GOD reigns victorious and HE always wins! I praise GOD with you and stand with you in battle.
Blessings and many, many, prayers, andrea

Ping pong balls, OK. Flaming arrows?!... Only if God makes me a welder first!

I can imagine a whole room of Sunday Schoolers or VBS'ers flinging balls and blocking balls and just having a great time. Then, we'd have to stop them and ask them to recite the verse, lest they forget what all the ping-ponging is about.

Glad your TV held up OK. Had it been on certain channels, God might have let one of those balls do some damage! Good thing you don't watch TV.....

P.S. Speaking of Proverbs, I closed out the Proverbs study today with a revisit to "burning coals." You were right....there's quite a lot of material out there on the subject.

I was thinking exactly the same thing that Sue J was (though not as articulately I'm sure, lol). Anyway, I could definitely see this as a Vacation Bible School project. AND, I could see you as a terrific VBS teacher.

CK is right too, your grandkids are blessed to have you and WILL surely rise up and call you blessed.

Hey, I have an idea. You move to VA (or we move to TX). You can be a surrogate grandmother to my kids and a BFF to me!

Active participation teaching. Do you have formal education training? I am amazed more and more by the WONDERFUL Christian lessons I see here on this internet thingy.
Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Edie,

I love how you not only teach them the scripture but educate them on the meanings as well. I guess you could have written things on the ping pong balls as well, like mean words, not obeying parents, not listening and not sharing.

This would make for a great Bible school lesson as well. Thank you so much for the visual since I process that so much better.

Susan - The ping pong balls were blocked.

Sue J - A welder or a wielder? Funny, I can picture that room full of kids with shields and ping pong balls too. And me right there with them. That would be fun!

Pink Shoe Lady - I taught K SS for about 3 years and thought that's what I was called to permanently but it's not.

ADHD-Jo - You got it my BFF!

KW - No I have no formal education training. I have never thought of myself as a teacher. God pushed me into the SS teaching that I did and I loved it. I'm just a kid at heart with a creative spirit and a love for God.

Kat - What a great idea. Now if I can just find those ping pong balls.

I don't know if I could add to what all these great comments have already shared with you. You are such an inspiration to so many, girl.

What a life lesson these girls will remember for the rest of their lives! And now, when you discern that the enemy is trying to attack them, you can say, "Put up your shield, child! Hold it up!" :-)

Edie, this is a great teaching tool.
I just hope they don't read the part about the flaming arrows...Do you have a fire extinguisher?

Edie,

Those precious beautiful little girls of yours will remember all that their Grandmother is teaching them in the WORD. It will walk with them for A LIFETIME just as my Grandma's teachings have stayed with me.

You're a light before them as you show them the LIGHT of JESUS CHRIST.

Love you.

Reminds me of the SHIELD of FAITH from Believing God...
1. God is Who He says He is.
2. God can do what He says He can do.
3. I am who God says I am.
4. I can do all things through Christ.
5. God's Word is alive and active in me.

Blessings over those grandkids...
what a beautiful bunch!
